Headquartered in London and Los Angeles, Lightbox is a multi-platform media company creating high quality content for an array of distribution platforms. It was founded by two-time Academy Award®-winning producer Simon Chinn (Man on Wire, Searching for Sugar Man, LA92, Whitney) and Emmy® Award-winning producer Jonathan Chinn (LA 92, Whitney, American High, 30 Days).
Lightbox’s recent productions include Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion, a feature documentary for HBO which premiered at SXSW in 2024 and became one of the most watched documentaries of that year on MAX; Camden, a 4-part series for Disney+ (and Hulu in the US) about the musical icons who were shaped by this storied North London precinct; David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, a BAFTA and Emmy-nominated feature documentary for HBO and Sky Documentaries telling the story of Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double who had a life-changing accident on the penultimate Harry Potter film; The Mission, an Emmy nominated feature documentary for National Geographic which premiered at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival in 2023, followed by a theatrical release and launch on Disney+.
Other notable works include: The Princess, the first theatrical release documentary about Princess Diana, crafted exclusively from archive footage, which became HBO’s most watched documentary when it launched in 2022; Netflix hit true crime series Sins of Our Mother; Spector, a 4-part series for Showtime and Sky about the iconic music producer and convicted murderer, Phil Spector; Tina, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and is the only documentary made with the full participation of the Queen of Rock and Roll – the late, great Tina Turner – and is directed by Academy® and Emmy® Award winners Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin; Whitney, the only ever fully authorised documentary about musical legend Whitney Houston, directed by Academy Award®-winner Kevin Macdonald, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was theatrically released around the world in 2018; Netflix feature documentary Tell Me Who I Am, directed by Oscar-nominee Ed Perkins, which premiered to critical acclaim at Telluride and the London Film Festival; and the Academy Award®-nominated short, Black Sheep, also from director Ed Perkins.
Projects currently in production include: Gunpowder Siege, Lightbox’s first fully scripted series for Sky History about the extraordinary but little known events that followed the iconic Gunpowder Plot of 1605, Katrina (w/t), a major 5-part documentary series for National Geographic to mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in 2025; and The Diamond Heist, a 3-part documentary series for Netflix about the biggest attempted diamond robbery in the world, which is executive produced by Guy Ritchie.
